September 11, 2015 (Airportchandigarh.com): PM Modi inaugurated the new international terminal in Mohali this morning. Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Ashok Gajapathi Raju (Union Civil Aviation Minister), Deputy CM (Punjab) Sukhbir Singh Badal, CM Parkash Singh Badal and Kirron Kher (Chandigarh MP) were also present at the venue.
Modi spent about ten minutes inside the terminal and quickly left without making any announcements. The plaque that was unveiled read "New Civil Air Terminal". So far no name has been finalized for the new terminal expected to operate international flights in the near future. The sign outside the building read "INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WELCOMES YOU."
After the inauguration, Modi left to attend the convocation ceremony at PGIMER (Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research). Thereafter he will attend a BJP rally at Sector 25 in Chandigarh. Congress workers who had planned a protest at the rally were detained by the police at Sector 39 police station.
The new terminal at Mohali has been built by Larsen and Toubro (L&T) using the latest green technologies making the terminal building energy efficient. The baggage handling system is one of the most efficient, having a unique conveyor belt system installed by a German company.
International flights are yet awaited from the new terminal and are expected to start in a month's time. The domestic flight operations will gradually get shifted to the new terminal within the next few days.
