Passengers Woes: As Usual at Chandigarh Airport in Winters

December 10, 2010 : Thursday evening, a flight bound for Mumbai from Chandigarh was cancelled 30 minutes before take-off, leaving the passengers stranded at Chandigarh domestic airport. Bad weather and fog, which commonly delay flights, completely canceled this one.

Go Air authorities reportedly refused to help the 30 passengers of the cancelled flight find food and lodging. Passengers were therefore left to fend for themselves. One passenger who was to travel home on the flight said that it was strange behavior on the part of the officials who would not help her. She said that she had traveled to Chandigarh on business and spent considerable money on a plane ticket only to be forced to spend the night in the airport.

According to the passenger, the concerned official would not even arrange for her to travel on the Friday morning flight to Mumbai. The official would only put passengers from the cancelled flight on the Friday night plane. This means that stranded passengers would have to spend over 24 hours in the airport.

Another passenger was told that a flight meant to accommodate the stranded passengers had already flown to Mumbai from Delhi. He was very upset at being stranded in the airport through no fault of his own.

However, a GoAir official said that some stranded passengers had been sent to Delhi to take the morning flight onwards to Mumbai. He said that about 25 of the 30 passengers, however, would not take this suggested step and instead demanded that a special aircraft be arranged. He pointed out that the airline does not have a policy to arrange another aircraft under such circumstances and that they were not contractually bound to provide lodging for the stranded passengers.
