Road Connectivity With International Airport Coming Up at Mohali
May 29, 2014 (AirportChandigarh.com): The current airport at Chandigarh is easy to access by road. The airport road can be accessed off NH 21, close to The Tribune roundabout. From NH21, it is only about 2 minutes drive to the airport parking. The new international airport will use the current runway belonging to Chandigarh Airport. However, the terminal building will be located on the other side of the airport runway, which falls under the state of Punjab.
Currently, there is no easy access to the new terminal building that is under construction. As the construction is expected to be completed by next year, Chandigarh Administration has already started to plan easy access to the new airport terminal by road. There are three possible options that are proposed in the Chandigarh master plan.
1. The easiest option would be to connect the existing road to the current airport with the new terminal via an underground tunnel across the runway i.e. if it is feasible. Using this route, there will be no additional commute required by vehicles trying to reach the new terminal.
2. The second option is to provide road connectivity from Purv Marg near Sector 48. This will be a good option for Chandigarh residents who are living in the southern sectors and also in Mohali.
3. The third option is to have road connectivity via Zirakpur off NH21. This option will provide easy access to people coming from Haryana via Zirakpur, Punjab from Patiala road and Himachal Pradesh.
Chandigarh Administration has taken up the matter with the High Powered Inter-State Coordination Committee constituted by the GOI.
