Protestors Group Together Pushing Centre to Name the Airport After Bhagat Singh

October 12, 2015 (AirportChandigarh.com): Protestors from various organizations gathered together in Chandigarh yesterday demanding that the new airport terminal in Mohali be named after the martyr Bhagat Singh. Relatives of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Patiala MP Dharamvir Gandhi were also present at the protest near The Tribue Chowk.

The Punjab Assembly had passed a resolution to name the new terminal after the martyr Bhagat Singh and the name "Shaheed-E-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh International Airport Mohali" was proposed. So far the Centre has not finalized any name for the airport despite of many activists and politicians of Punjab demanding to name it after the martyr.

Haryana had initially objected to the name during the tenure of Haryana's CM Hooda, however the CM later agreed but wanted to replace Mohali with Chandigarh. Many other variations of the name were then proposed but never agreed upon. The new CM of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar had offered to work out the airport's name amicably with Punjab. Since the new terminal will open its door to general public on October 19, it is quite likely that a new name of the airport will also be announced then.

The protestors even carried a signboard that read: "Shaheed-E-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh International Airport, Chandigarh."
